Side-lying (Laying on your left or right side), Semi-reclining (Upper body is slightly elevated), or sitting in a chair depending on client's comfort.
Prone position (laying on your stomach) is not recommended, even with a specialized equipment such as "cut-out" tables or cushions. Some massage therapy tables may have a cut out for the breasts and baby bump, but after the second trimester, it is best to avoid this position. Supine (laying on your back)-- use pillow under right lower torso, up to week 22. After week 22, supine is not recommended; use semi-reclining or side-lying positions only to prevent supine hypotensive syndrome (obstruction of the inferior vena cava). Chair massage is also okay.
Side-lying and semi-reclining positions only. Chair massage is also okay.
Always coordinate care and communicate with your prenatal health care provider if you are experiencing a high risk pregnancy to ensure that massage can benefit mother and baby before receiving a massage therapy session.
